SOUTH POINT — Evidently, the South Point Lady Pointers get a lot of mileage from a tank of gas.
After a grueling game on Tuesday, the Lady Pointers showed plenty of energy on Thursday as they edged the Minford Lady Falcons 2-1 in a soccer game.
“I thought we would be a bit beat up and gasses after playing a physical battle on Tuesday with Chesapeake,” said South Point coach Zach Jenkins.
“We actually bounced back with an even better performance I thought. Minford is as solid as anyone we have played thus far.”
The first half was scoreless as the teams just battled back-and-forth.
Minford (2-4) took a 1-0 lead at the 42-minute mark of the second half on an unassisted goal by Megan Johnson.
But four minutes later, South Point (4-2) came back to tie the game on a goal by Emilee Whitt with an assist by Neele Bennje.
The score remained tie until Kylee Ellison scored with an assist by Whitt and South Point led 2-1 with 62:00 on the clock.
“(Minford) is very athletic at all levels and have a great deal of speed. My girls never laid down. Neele did a good job causing their defense fits. Her speed and skill helped us to stretch out their defense and get other scoring opportunities,” said Jenkins.
“We made a couple of adjustments with our positioning at halftime which I think helped lead to our second goal where Whitt found Ellison up the left flank. I give the girls so much credit.”
South Point goalkeeper Katie Lester had seven saves and the Lady Pointers had six corner kicks.
“I though Katie Lester played her best game tonight,” said Jenkins.
Minford’s keeper Kiersten Hale had eight saves and the Lady Falcons had three corner kicks.
South Point hosts unbeaten Gallipolis on Tuesday in a key Ohio Valley Conference game.
