In a low-scoring game, the Lady Hornets beat the Green Lady Bobcats 33-24 Thursday in a non-league game.

“Some may have called it a defensive struggle, I call it a win,” said Roach.

Coal Grove led just 7-6 at the end of the first quarter. The defense took over and held Green scoreless in the second quarter to take a 15-6 halftime lead.

The Lady Hornets had their own shooting problems but managed to convert 8 of 11 from the line to take the lead.

“This game was ugly from the start. No one could run their offense because of turnovers,” said Roach.

Coal Grove led 22-14 at the end of the third quarter despite six points from Green’s Breanna Johnson.

Coal Grove (3-5) had seven players in the scoring column led by Ashley Adkins and Darrien Hankins with seven points each. Hankins was 5 of 6 at the line.

Johnson finished with eight points, 11 rebounds and seven steals. Carlee Pollard added seven rebounds for Green (1-6).
