CHESAPEAKE — The nickname says South Point is the Lady Pointers, but they could easily be bulldogs.
In yet another tough game, the Lady Pointers battled past the Chesapeake Lady Panthers 3-1 on Tuesday in an Ohio Valley Conference soccer game.
“Once again, it seems every game we play is a total dogfight,” said Lady Pointers’ coach Zach Jenkins. “If I had one word to describe how my girls played it would be resilient.
“Chesapeake played very hard and very physical all night long. Our depth really helped up out through the 100-plus degree weather and the physicality that Chesapeake played with.”
The Lady Pointers (3-2, 2-1 OVC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half.
Kylee Ellison scored a goal at the 9-minute mark with an assist from Emilee Whitt.
Whitt got a goal of her own on a penalty kick with 25:00 on the first half clock.
Chesapeake scored to start the second half as Kenzie Johnson connected on a penalty kick at the 44:00 mark.
But the Lady Pointers added some insurance on a goal by Sarah Roach with an assist from Neele Bennje at the 70-minute mark.
South Point goalkeeper Katie Lester had five saves while Chesapeake’s Maddie McKee and 11 saves.
The Lady Pointers lost Ellison on a first half collision and Whitt went down in the second half.
“Whitt is our heartbeat. She does so many things so well and plays so calm in the midfield. She generates a lot of what we do offensively. Kylee played outstanding throughout the first half,” said Jenkins.
“Both were major blows. The girls really stepped up at that points. They played with a big of a chip on their shoulder after seeing the girls go out. Kate Mundy came off the bench and gave us a spark. Abby Broughton and Bridgette Aylsworth all filled in and did a really good job.”
The Lady Pointers had 11 corner kicks to the Lady Panthers four.
South Point hosts Minford on Thursday.
