Flyers open soccer season with pair of easy victories

So far in the young season, “7” has been the lucky number for the St. Joseph Flyers.
St. Joseph (2-0) opened the season on Tuesday with a 7-1 win over the Fairland Dragons and followed that with a 7-0 shutout of the New Boston Tigers on Thursday.
Isaac Whaley and J.C. Damron scored two goal each while Jimmy Mahlmeister, Ryan Payne and Jared Johnson all had a goal in the win over New Boston.
Matthew Sheridan, Zach Roach, Whaley, Johnson and Payne all had an assist.
The goalkeepers did their job as Mahlmeister had four saves and Dmitri Ward two. New Boston’s Kyle Sexton had 11 saves.
The Flyers had 31 shots with 18 on goal to go with 10 fouls and six corner kicks. New Boston had just 11 shots with six on goal, two corner kicks and five fouls.
Whaley celebrated the hat trick with three goals to lead the Flyers win over Fairland. Bryce Balestra, Jackson Rowe, Damron and Sheridan all scored goals.
The Flyers had four assists with Balestra, Johnson, Sheridan and Whaley getting one each.
Mahlmeister racked up 12 saves.
St. Joseph had 34 shots with 19 on goal, eight corner kicks and 10 fouls. Fairland finished with 17 shots and 13 on goal, five corner kicks and four fouls.
The Flyers visit Portsmouth West on Tuesday.
