The Lady Panthers turned up its defense and running game in the second half as they pulled away to a 57-46 win over Wayne on Monday.

“Our game plan was to get out and run and wear them down and we eventually did that,” said Chesapeake coach Chris Ball.

“Wayne has a nice team and we knew that coming in. Our girls realized they were in for a ball game. They had some shooters and we didn’t do a very good job defending them in the first half.”

Wayne (2-2) made seven 3-pointers including six in the first half.

Chesapeake was up 10-8 at the end of the first quarter, but Samantha Queen drained three 3-pointers in the second quarter as Wayne rallied to take a 28-19 halftime lead.

“We hadn’t played for 10 days and stood around and didn’t execute on the defensive end. We got after it a little more in the second half,” said Ball.

Sarah Mayo and Amanda Ruffner scored six points each in the third quarter as Chesapeake came back to get within 35-34.

The Lady Panthers continued to dominate in the fourth quarter and built a 10-point lead. Wayne was forced to foul and Chesapeake converted 14 of 18 from the foul line with Mayo going 8 of 10 down the stretch.

Ruffner finished with 19 points, 11 rebounds, six steals and three blocked shot. Mayo had 16 points, five assists and four steals.

Maggie Smith added 10 points for the Lady Panthers (3-1).

“Maggie Smith has been very consistent for us. She’s a kind of a spark for us,” said Ball.

Paige Childers had 13points and Kristen Stiltner 12 for Wayne.

In the reserve game, Chesapeake won 33-26 as Taylor Martin scored eight points and Jordan Porter six.
