The Southern Chapter of the Ohio University Alumni Association recently received the Lindley Student Networking Award for keeping the Ohio University Southern students connected with the main OU campus in Athens.
The Southern Chapter was honored for hosting a simulcast at Southern’s Ironton Campus and Proctorville Center of a lecture by Sam Quinones, author of the best-selling book, Dreamland. Quinones visited Athens Oct. 11, 2017, for a discussion about his research and book on the nation’s opioid crisis. The Southern Alumni hosted a live feed of the event.
“The Southern Chapter of Ohio Alumni wanted to offer the simulcast as a way for Southern Campus students and members of the community to participate in this important event,” said Nina Queen, chapter president. “We thought it was an important option for students to acquire more information on the current addiction problem in the Tri-State area,” she said.
Queen and Lois Terkhorn, vice-president, represented the Southern Chapter at the Awards ceremony. The group was also had a second nomination for the Lindley Award for hosting “Dinner with 12 Strangers” in which a dozen students were invited to sit down at dinner with OHIO alumna Jan Rader, Huntington West Virginia Fire Chief and one of TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World.
“Our alumni are an important part of the Southern Campus and Ohio University communities,” said Nicole Pennington, dean of the Southern Campus. “The campus appreciates all efforts by our alumni to foster relationships with students in the community, in the workplace and at University events,” she said. “Their efforts help our students see the bigger picture beyond graduation.”
The Alumni Chapter accepted the honor at the Alumni Leaders Conference Awards reception on May 18 in the Walter Hall Rotunda on the campus of Ohio University in Athens.
The Lindley Student Networking Award was created in 2009 to celebrate the alumni association’s 150th anniversary and recognizes efforts which create opportunity for student-alumni networking. The Lindley Student Networking Award acknowledges alumni groups which demonstrate excellence in the creation of opportunities for alumni to connect with current Ohio University students.
