The Ohio University Southern Community Band will have its first performance of 2018 at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Ironton Briggs Library. The program, titled “Music of British Isles,” features marches, ballads, folk songs and dance music rooted in the Celtic and Gaelic traditions. Admission is free and open to the public.

The community band is a small concert band consisting of about 20 students and non-students from the greater Tri-State area and performs several times a year on and off campus. This past October, the band performed its annual fall concert at Ohio University Southern. During the Christmas season, the band performed for the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce Festival of Trees, the Ironton Briggs Library, and the Christmas parades in Ashland and Ironton among others.

Band participants range in age from teenagers to those in their 70s, and come from all walks of life. Several members have joined the band after decades of not playing music, and have not missed a beat. The band performs standard concert band arrangements, ranging from easy to medium difficulty, and represents a variety of musical styles and genres, including marches, music from musicals and TV shows, pop music, jazz, ragtime, rock and roll and arrangements of major orchestra works.
