There are many who serve the public, but few that spend decades doing it so well.

Last Tuesday at the Chesapeake Village Council, Peggy Houston announced she was retiring as the village’s fiscal officer at age 84.

She served in the full-time position that people informally referred to as “clerk-treasurer” for the past 24 years.

Besides being the fiscal officer, she led the council in opening prayer and she recorded the minutes at the meetings.

Mayor Tommy Templeton said he never thought he would see the day that Houston retired and former Mayor Dick Gilpin called her “the glue that held this town together” and that her knowledge of all the workings of the village would be missed.

Houston reminded the council members she lived close by and was still willing to help out, adding she was just a phone call away.

We commend Houston for her years of service and wish her all the enjoyment retirement has to offer.
