Portsmouth rallies past South Point

SOUTH POINT — This fishing story was true. You should have seen the one that got away.
The South Point Pointers saw a 10-point lead in the third quarter disappear as the Portsmouth Trojans rallied for 65-58 Ohio Valley Conference win on Friday.
“We had the lead and then we just fell apart. We turned the ball over at some crucial times. We let it slip through our fingers,” said Pointers’ coach Travis Wise.
“We out outscored 25-12 in the fourth quarter. That was the reason we lost.”
Tayshaun Fox had 17 points and Douglas Shaffer hit four 3-point goals and scored 16 points to lead the Pointers (2-2, 1-1). Freshman Austin Webb had 15 points and eight rebounds.
Freshman Matthew Fraulini made three 3-pointers and scored 17 points to pace Portsmouth (4-1, 1-1). D.J. Eley scored 15, Daniel Jordan 13 and Isaac Kelly 12 as four players reached double figures.
Portsmouth led 17-14 after the first quarter but South Point came back to go up 31-26 at the half.
After building a 10-point lead in the third quarter, but the Trojans began a comeback and got within 46-40 at the end of the quarter.
The Trojans then took a 60-58 lead and Eley got the offensive rebound on a missed free throw and was fouled.
Eley hit one attempt for a 61-58 lead and the Pointers couldn’t score the rest of the game.
South Point was 23-of-52 from the field for 44 percent but just 7-of-22 from the 3-point line for 32 percent and 5-of-8 at the foul line.
South Point will host River Valley on Dec. 29 while Portsmouth entertains Western on Wednesday.
