RIO GRANDE — Once the South Pointer Pointers got going, they wouldn’t stop.
Down by a basket at the half, the Pointers turned in a strong second half as they beat the South Webster Jeeps 61-51 on Saturday in the Newt Oliver Classic at the University of Rio Grande.
Tayshaun Fox scored 19 points and Douglas Shaffer hit four 3-pointers as he scored 17 points to lead the Pointers (1-1). Austin Webb added 10 points.
The Jeeps (0-2) were led by 6-foot-5 Shiloah Blevins with 27 points, 20 rebounds and four blocked shots. Blevins was 12-of-14 at the line and South Webster was 20-of-26 as a team.
South Point was up 13-12 in the first quarter as Fox it a pair of 3-pointers and Shaffer added another.
Blevins and Samuel Holstein each hit a 3-pointer and combined for all of South Webster’s points.
Blevins and Jacob Ruth each went 4-for-4 at the foul line in the second quarter as the Jeeps rallied to take a 24-22 halftime lead. Webb scored six points while Fox had five points and three assists.
The Pointers outscored the Jeeps 20-14 in the third quarter to regain the lead at 42-38. Shaffer drained a pair of 3-pointers and Jared Whitt added another.
Blevins scored nine points for the Jeeps.
South Point continued to pull away in the fourth quarter as Shaffer scored eight points including a triple and 3-of-4 at the line while Fox scored five points. Blevins had seven of the Jeeps’ 13 points.
The Pointers host Chesapeake on Tuesday.
