A safe Trick or Treat

Tonight, children across Lawrence County will dress up and take to the streets as villages and residents across the county take part in Trick or Treat.

As always, we advise parents to take steps to make sure that their children have a safe experience.

Here are a few tips on treats, courtesy of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration:

• Teach children not to accept, and not to eat, anything that is not commercially wrapped. Inspect treats for signs of tampering, such as an unusual appearance or discoloration, tiny pinholes or tears in wrappers. Throw away anything that looks suspicious.

• If a child has a food allergy, check labels to be sure the allergens are not present. Do not allow children with allergies to eat any home-baked goods he or she may have received.

• With very young children, be sure to remove any choking hazards such as gum, peanuts, hard candies or small toys.

The American Academy of Pediatrics advises the following when out on the streets:

• Costumes should be bright and reflective. Make sure shoes fit well and costumes are short enough to prevent tripping or contact with flame.

• Masks can limit or block eyesight — consider non-toxic makeup and hats as alternatives.

• Look for and purchase costumes, wigs and accessories with a label indicating they are flame resistant.

• If a sword, cane, or stick is a part of a costume, be sure it is not sharp or long, to prevent injuries if a child stumbles or trips.

• Review with children how to call 911 if they ever have an emergency or become lost.

• A parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children while Trick or Treating.

• If older children are going alone, plan and review a route that is acceptable. Agree on a specific time when they should be expected home.
