CHESAPEAKE — Speeding on Second Avenue is Chesapeake was a topic discussed at Monday’s meeting of village council.

Mayor Tommy Templeton said new speed limit signs have been installed on the street and officers are focusing on the problem.

The council also voted to retroactively hire D. Matt Adkins as a part-time officer in the village. Adkins had started work a few weeks ago

“But now I have some bad news,” Templeton said, announcing that Adkins has been hired as a full-time officer with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office.

“His last day with us will be Oct. 9,” he said.

Fire chief Frank Meehling, of the Chesapeake-Fayette Volunteer Fire Department, told the council that he has been contacted by the Lawrence County Health Department and that any residents who have a problem with mosquitoes should call them.

“They’ll take care of the source,” he said. “If there’s standing water, like an old pool, they’ll come and kill the larvae.”

Meehling said he was told by health officials that the Zika virus has been found in some Ohio counties.

He said the health department can be contacted at 740-532-3962.

Templeton said he was also contacted about spraying for mosquitoes in the village, which will cost $250.

Meehling also $900 of the fire department’s budget has been spent toward a new roof, including the cost to get electrical service changed, due to the change in height of the new roof.

He also noted that Fayette Township would host its fall clean-up on Saturday from 8 a.m.-3 p.m.

• The council voted to approve last month’s minutes, bills and mayor’s court report.

• Templeton announced that the village’s Trick-or-treat times are set for Tuesday, Oct. 31, from 6-7:30 p.m.
