Reds claim Ferrell off waivers from LA

CINCINNATI — The Reds claimed right-handed pitcher Luke Farrell off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday and optioned him to AAA Louisville.
The Reds designated outfielder/infielder Scott Van Slyke for assignment.
Farrell in started the season at AAA Omaha. At Omaha he went 7-4 with a 4.07 era in 17 games — 16 starts.
On July 1, Kansas City recalled him from Omaha and he made his major league debut against Minnesota and he worked 2.2 innings with seven hits, five runs — all earned— three walks and two strikeouts.
He was optioned the followaying day back to Omaha and then designated for assignment on July 24.
Four days later he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers for cash and optioned AAA Oklahoma City.
He has pitched in one game at Oklahoma City, a start on Aug. 6 at Las Vegas (4.2ip, 4h, 3r, 2er, 2bb, 5k).
Farrell was originally selected by Kansas City in the sixth round of the 2013 draft from Northwestern University.
He earned a communications studies degree from Northwestern University in 2013.
Ferrell graduated from St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland in 2009.
He is the son of Red Sox manager John Farrell. Older brothers Jeremy and Shane also played professional baseball and both currently work in the Chicago Cubs front office.
