Inflatables, music, vendors round out weekend

Coal Grove Fire Chief Gary Sherman has found a location to safely conduct the villages fireworks display this year. The new location will require viewers to orient themselves toward the little league field to catch the show, but Sherman said that most of the village should “see a good show from anywhere.”

“You’re just going to need to turn your head in a little different direction,” Sherman explained.

This new location keeps the fireworks a safe distance from any structures, and minimizes risk of fire or injury to the public, according to Sherman, without affecting viewing or the size of the display.

The fireworks display is the capstone of the weekend long Coal Grove Family Fun Days. The event, which runs from 4-10 p.m., Saturday, July 1, to Monday, July 3, features a variety of different vendors, crafts, food, and inflatables and games for the kids.

“There is also a take-a-chance for a basket, filled with goods from local vendors,” said Vickie McDaniel, President of the Coal Grove Betterment Club, as well as the cake and pie auction on Monday night.

The Family Fun Days kicks off with an opening ceremony by VFW Post 8850 and Bridgette Wade at 4 p.m. on Saturday, followed by music from Abby Shae Kimball at 5 p.m., Katie Ausmus at 6 p.m., Country Nights from 7-9 p.m. and Craig Haney from 9-10 p.m.

On Sunday Jeff Carmon performs for half an hour starting at 4 p.m., Souls of the Wounded from 4:30-6 p.m., and Bill McDaniel will perform from 6-7 p.m., and again from 7:30-8 p.m., giving a half hour of his time over to Emilie Matney from 7-7:30 p.m.

Monday night will culminate in the fireworks show at 10 p.m., but, before that, Southern Thunder, Tyler Waller and the Whipps will keep the crowd entertained.

Southern Thunder performs from 4-6 p.m., followed by a half hour break for the cake and pie auction. Tyler Waller brings the music back at 6:30 p.m., and the Whipps take over at 8 p.m. and play up until the fireworks display.

McDaniel said that the event should be a good, family-friendly time for Coal Grove residents and visitors from surrounding communities.

“We hope to have good weather this year,” she said.
