CHESAPEAKE — Splitting hairs led to splitting a doubleheader.
The Chesapeake Panthers and Portsmouth West Senators split a doubleheader on Saturday in two games that were decided by one run.
West got an unearned run in the seventh inning to win the first game 3-2 and the Panthers scored in the bottom of the eighth inning to win the nightcap 5-4.
“They were both well-pitched games and both teams had to scratch out runs. There weren’t many hits,” said Panthers’ coach Justin Davis.
In the first game, West used three errors to score two runs in the third inning.
Chesapeake tied the game in the fourth.
Casey McComas and Tyler Eddy walked, both moved up on a wild pitch and Evan Burcham hit a sacrifice fly. Dalton Nida squeeze home the second run.
In the top of the seventh for West, Buster Boggs reached on an error, Joey Cyrus put down a sacrifice and Dylan Bradford followed with an RBI single.
Bradford got the win as he went the distance. McComas started and went six innings. He struck out six, walked two and did not give up a hit.
Kelton Jones pitched the seventh and took the loss.
Wes Malavenda singled in the third for the Panthers’ only hit.
Chesapeake (10-12) came back to win the second game with a run in the eighth.
Bryce Depriest singled to start the inning and he went to second on a wild pitch. Zach Wright then doubled in the gap to score Depriest with the winning run.
West scored three runs in the second inning before the Panthers got two runs in the fourth.
Jamey Mills and Depriest singled and Bretton Martin and Jones walked to force in a run. McComas hit into a force play to score the second run.
The Panthers came back with two more runs in the fifth.
Dalton Nida singled, went to second on a balk, Tyler Eddy was safe on an error and Mills squeezed home Nida. Depriest was safe on an error for a run.
Mills got the win in relief. He worked four innings, struck out five, walked three and gave up one hit.
