Roof improvements set to begin next Monday
The Greenup County Commissioners discussed the impending improvements to the Greenup County Jail during the old business portion of their meeting on Tuesday morning. County Judge Executive Robert Carpenter told the fiscal court that he had met with Perfection Group earlier in the morning, and handed over the first check for the project. The contractors will begin repairs to the jail roof on Monday, and will complete other improvements to the jail as the contract continues.
The commissioners also approved advertising for annual bids for gasoline and oil products, gravel and stone, asphalt and blacktop, hauling services, and salt. Those bids will be opened next meeting and awarded in June.
Commissioners approved advertising for the sale of surplus vehicles from the road department and the sheriff. There are a total of 17 vehicles, including dump trucks and other heavy equipment, as well as steel beams that will be advertised for sale. Carpenter said that bids must be submitted as sealed bids, which the commissioners will open in their next regular meeting.
Commissioners accepted the Olshea Hollow Road extension as well, accepting the stretch of road discussed in past meetings after determining that it was built to county standards.
In new business, the commissioners moved to approve expenses for required workshops and seminars, accept the jail report, accept the E911 report and approve the dismissal of an unnamed employee and approve the hiring of Melissa Blankenship. They also received the alternative sentencing report, noting that seven individuals successfully completed the program and that they saved the county $5,616 in costs with 860 hours of labor.
In other new business the commissioners paid $54,700 in statutory obligations to the PVA, and presented the 2017/2018 budget for a first reading. The budget as written must be amended again, however, as State Representative Danny Bentley noted at the start of the meeting that he has secured $155,400 to be earmarked for the Reed Street Project in Flatwoods.
They also moved to approve a $40,000 budget for the Greenup County Conservation District.
In appointments, the commissioners approved the appointment of Tom Saylor as a member of the Tax Assessment board for a three-year term, with Tonja McCloud as an alternate. Doug Collins was appointed Deputy Judge Executive, formalizing a role that Carpenter said he has already been serving in de facto. They also moved to accept the resignation of Lettie Gullett from the Board of Directors for the Little Sandy Fire Department, and to appoint Andy Zabrieszack to fill her role.
They also moved to hire Bobby Allen as part-time Director of Economic Development and Tourism, to hire summer help for the solid waste department, and to issue proclamations for Arbor Day, Child Abuse Awareness Month, and P.R. Davis Day, and to proclaim April 28 as Anne Ratch Day, honoring her retirement.
