MOBILE, ALABAMA – An Ironton man was shot and killed at an Alabama motel.
According to reports, 24-year-old Coaty Bankston was arrested Monday, a day after 36-year-old Robert Williams was shot and killed at an Extend A Suites motel in Mobile.
Mobile Police spokeswoman Charlette Solis says there was reportedly an argument in a second-floor room of the motel before gunshots were heard.
Mobile jail records show Bankston has prior convictions on theft of property, criminal trespass and other charges. It is not clear if she has an attorney.
Alabama TV station Fox10 reported that Williams lived in Ironton but was in Mobile, Alabama to work for a few months.
“We have no reason to believe they knew each other,” Mobile County District Attorney Ashley Rich told the television station. He believes the two had just met right before the incident. “After she shot him, the evidence will show that she went through his pockets, and then waited a substantial period of time before reporting what she did to the police.”
The television station was told the shooting happened inside Bankston’s room at the Extend A Suites. Hotel guests told the television station told the television station shots were heard around 3 a.m. on Saturday night but didn’t report it to police because they didn’t see anything when they came out of their rooms.
Bankston’s family said the woman spent the day at the beach with them without saying anything about the shooting until they dropped her off at the motel.
Mobile Police got the call at 8:13 p.m. on Sunday. They found the body Williams inside the hotel room.
Bankston had claimed Williams tried to rape her and she shot him in self-defense.
Bankston pleaded not guilty at a bond hearing on Wednesday. She is being held at in jail on $100,000 bond because the judge considers her a flight risk.
