McDERMOTT — It was just too many threes.
The St. Joseph Flyers couldn’t overcome 10 3-point goals by the Northwest Mohawks in a 48-39 loss Saturday afternoon.
Dustin Taylor hit five 3-pointers and Mason Campbell came off the bench to hit four more as the Mohawks won their second straight.
“We guarded them. It wasn’t like we left them wide-open. We battled the whole game. We didn’t have a lot of spring in our step and they just hit some shots,” said Flyers’ coach Rex Cooksey.
Chase Walters had 16 points and seven rebounds to lead the Flyers (6-9). Clay Willis had eight rebounds and four assists while Isaac Whaley had eight points and Zac McGraw seven rebounds.
Taylor finished with 17 points, Campbell 13 and Kyle Leslie 10 for Northwest (4-9).
Campbell hit a pair of 3-pointers as Northwest took a 10-9 first quarter lead. Walters scored four and Whaley hit a 3-pointer for the Flyers.
The Mohawks went up 23-20 at the half as Taylor ht two 3-pointers in the second quarter. Zach Roach came off the bench to drain a couple of trifectas for St. Joseph.
Taylor had seven points in the third quarter as Northwest extended its lead to 37-32. Whaley and Walters scored five points each in the third.
Walters got five more in the fourth quarter but Taylor and Campbell had four points each as the Mohawks sealed the win.
St. Joseph hosts Ohio Valley Christian on Monday and visits New Boston on next Saturday.
