CHESAPEAKE — Controlling the tempo helped the Fairland Lady Dragons control their league lead.
The Lady Dragons got the pace they wanted as the beat the rival Chesapeake Lady Panthers 59-27 and remain atop the Ohio Valley Conference standings.
Fairland is 11-0 overall and 7-0 in the league. Chesapeake fell to 7-4 and 4-3.
“Chesapeake does a good job of controlling the tempo and it’s a rivalry game,” said Fairland coach Jon Buchanan.
“We did a good job of getting the game going a little faster, but it didn’t have the same flow. I think a lot of that had to do with the emotions in the game.”
Emily Chapman scored 15 points while Taylar Wilson and Alesha Simpson scored 12 each to pace a balanced Fairland offense.
Brooke Webb had seven points for the Lady Panthers who played without point guard and leading scorer Natalee Hall who did not play due to illness.
Fairland jumped in front 17-7 in the first quarter as Chapman scored seven points.
Simpson scored eight points in the second quarter as Fairland extended the lead to 32-16.
It was Wilson’s turn in the third quarter as she scored six points and the Lady Dragons opened up a 49-23 lead.
Britney Thompson came off the bench to score five points in the fourth quarter as Fairland outscored Chesapeake 16-4 to win going away.
Fairland plays at area power Huntington High on Monday and hosts Rock Hill next Thursday in a OVC game.
Chesapeake hosts Gallipolis next Thursday in a league game.
