LUCASVILLE — Like a cold engine, it took the Coal Grove Lady Hornets a little time to warm up.
Once they did, they cruised past the Lucasville Valley Lady Indians 58-33 on Saturday.
“We have had a little break in games and practice because of the weather. It definitely showed during the first quarter. We were a little sluggish,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Rick Roach.
“We finally got our legs under us and started playing better basketball.
Emily Compliment scored 16 points to lead the Lady Hornets (7-3). Bailey McKnight added 11 points and Lauren Crum had 9.
“We saw some box and one and a few other junk defenses. I felt like we adjusted well. Even though Compliment was my leading scorer, all my girls know they have a responsibility to step up and score when she draws extra attention,” said Roach.
Maddie Wright scored 14 for Lucasville Valley. — 9 in the first half.
The game was tied 11-11 after the first quarter, but Compliment scored 9 points in the second quarter and the Lady Hornets were 5-of-8 from the foul line as they took a 28-19 halftime lead.
The Lady Hornets added a point to the lead in the third quarter and it was 36-26.
But Destiny Dolen scored 6 points, McKnight 5 points and the Lady Hornets were 9-of-13 at the foul line in the quarter to seal the win.
“Seeing the maturity of my girls continues to amaze me. We did an awesome job of moving the ball and getting to the basket and drawing some fouls. (Kasey) Murphy and Crum did a nice job against their bigs,” said Roach.
“McKnight was able to get to the basket and finish. Dolen’s defense gave them some problems early in the fourth which in turn allowed her to create offense.”
Coal Grove hosts Chesapeake on Monday.
