Several community education courses are set to be offered this semester at Ohio University Southern, covering a wide range of topics and interests. The courses include:

Certified Emergency Response Training (CERT)

This is a course for non-first responders, and will teach students how to help themselves, families, friends and neighbors in the event of a disaster. Students will learn to provide critical support by giving immediate assistance, providing damage assessment information and organizing volunteers at a disaster site.

Aerobic Conditioning (Kickboxing)

Cardiovascular workout that utilizes kicks, punches, calisthenics and step aerobics to elevate heart rate and strengthen all major muscle groups, with specific strengthening, toning and stretching exercises included.

Out of Shape? Get Your Bobcat Groove On

Designed for people who are not regular exercisers, and will focus on low-impact aerobics, strength training and flexibility. Each class is a half hour long.

Landscaping

One-time course that teaches students basic residential landscape design, installation, maintenance and more. Topics to be discussed include proper planning for specific planting space, evaluating existing conditions to help the plants thrive, plant selection, creating year-round interest in your landscape and properly maintaining your investment.

Introductory Guitar I

Students will learn rudimentary theory pertaining to chord structure, basic chords and rhythm strumming, as well as being able to read tablature and recognize chord structure to play their favorite songs. Students should bring their own acoustic guitars.

Introductory Guitar II

Photography – It’s Not Automatic

For ages 13 and above. Students will learn the basic camera settings, vocabulary and photogenic techniques. Students will need a camera capable of manual, shutter and aperture mode, as well as a flash drive to store and share photos.

Tablets and Mobile Devices

Introduction to Excel Online

One-time course that teaches students how to take their collection of photos and make them into videos in a variety of creative ways.

The Underground Railroad in Burlington and Ironton

Covers history of the Underground Railroad in this area, and will bring local history alive using primary sources, will identify and give biographical sketches of the individuals of various ethnicities and religious beliefs who have worked together in an informal network of safe houses and escape routes to help enslaved African-Americans to freedom in the northern states and Canada.

Introduction to World Religions

Students will lean the beginnings, basic principles and distribution of the world’s major religions, including Christianity, Judaism, Hindu, Islam and Buddhism.

Dog Obedience – Puppy Kindergarten

Learn the basics of dog obedience at a more relaxed pace. Commands such as sit, stay, come and lie down, as well as good manners are the focus of the course because puppies have short attention spans. Positive reinforcement, praises and good parenting are emphasized. Do not bring the dog to the first class session.

Dog Obedience – Sub Novice

An on-leash course for owners to learn how to train dogs who are seven months or older. All of the basics, including sit, stay, come, lie down and heel, are covered. This course is based on positive reinforcement and working on getting your dog’s attention and trust. Puppy Kindergarten is not required. Do not bring the dog to the first class session.

Five Money Questions for Women

One-time course where students will get a perspective on a process women can use to identify financial goals and set a strategy. College: Getting There from Here

Retirement Has Changed: What’s Your Next Move?

One-time course where students will gain knowledge in defining retirement goals and creating a strategy to get there. Scenarios showing how changing variables such as saving more, choosing the right investments and waiting to retire will impact savings will be explored. The target audience is investors who are 5-15 years from retirement.

No Pressure Painting

Students will be invited to create a fully realized painting in a relaxed and fun environment. Paintings are pre-determined, but offer a fun, customizable element. All skill levels are welcome.

Drawing

Students will be invited to bring any image of their choosing, and through careful instruction and instruction of various techniques, will create a fully realized, graphite drawing of their chosen image. All skill levels are welcome.

Crafts: Chunky Bunnies

One-time course where students will turn wood, fabric and some wire into bunnies for Easter.

Crafts: Muffin Basket

Students will learn the basics of basket weaving while making a basket roughly 8”x10” and 4” high, from dyed or natural reed. Students will also choose whether their baskets are plain or with color accents.

Crafts: Bean Pot Basket

Students will learn how to use a continuous basket weaving technique with a separate handle added near completion. Students will make a swing-handle bean-pot-basket that is roughly 7” across the top and about 7” tall.

Crafts: Market Basket

Students will learn how to weave a medium sized market basket with a solid wood handle, woven from 3/8” reed.

Community Road Trip: Sights of Cincinnati

A complete tour of Cincinnati. Guests will depart from OUS in Ironton at 6 a.m. with a continental breakfast included. From 8:30-9:30 a.m., guests will tour the American Sign Museum. At 10 a.m., guests will sit in the dugout and visit the Press Box of Great American Ballpark and tour the Cincinnati Reds Museum. From 12:30-4:30 p.m., guests will walk to the Duke Energy Convention Center for the Cincinnati Home and Garden Show. At 5 p.m., guests will eat a buffet dinner at Golden Corral Eastgate (included). From 6:30-8:30 p.m., guests will be able to shop at Jungle Jim’s International Market. The bus will depart from Cincinnati at 8:30 p.m. with an approximate arrival time back in Ironton at 11 p.m.

• Cost: $99, due by Feb. 10. There is a minimum of 35 participants at this price.

Community Education classes are open to the general public, regardless of educational background. The classes are self-supporting, and the fees collected from Community Education cover all instructional, administrative and overhead cost of the program. The classes are non-credit and do not carry credit applicable toward an Ohio University degree or transfer to other institutions. If minimum enrollment is not yet for any of the classes, they may be canceled.

Enrollment fees may be paid with a valid credit car, check, money order or cash, however, cash payments must be less than $50. Enrollment must be completed at least three days before the start date, except for No Pressure Painting and Drawing, which need to be at least one week in advance, in order to get the correct number of supplies.
