Panthers, Hornets golf teams advance

FRIENDSHIP — That’ll be two to go.
The Chesapeake Panthers and Coal Grove Hornets finished among the top five teams at Wednesday’s Division III sectional golf tournament at Shawnee State Park and advanced to the district.
The top five teams and five individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the district to be held Monday at the Portsmouth Elks Country Club.
West Union won the team title with a 339 score. North Adams was next at 340 followed by Chesapeake at 353, Coal Grove at 355 and Manchester had a 359 to round out the qualifiers.
Eastern Brown was next at 379, Western had a 387, Portsmouth Clay 408, Lucasville Valley 411, South Webster 415, Fairfield 417, Portsmouth Notre Dame 427 and Whiteoak 431.
Chesapeake senior Derek Lemley carded a 71 on rounds of 36 and 35 to take medalist honors and lead the team to a third-place finish.
Justin Black shot 45 and 44 for an 89, Liam Thacker posted two 49s for a 98, Brandon Blair shot 43 and 52 for a 95 total and Brock Holley went 49 and 50 for a 99 total.
Black was 17th in the individual standings and Blair 25th.
Coal Grove was led by Jed Whitworth who shot rounds of 38 and 42 for an 80 total and was tied for fifth overall.
Trevor Deere had an 83 as he shot rounds of 40 and 43 and tied for seventh.
Ryan Malone was next at 96 with a 47 and 49, Jake Sites was 52 and 51 for a 103, and Garrett Holliday had a 96 with rounds of 45 and 51.
Green’s Andrew Ramey shot a 114 on rounds of 55 and 59 while Nathan Weigand went 52 and 66 for a 118.
Fairland Lady Dragons’ Hanna Shrout qualified for the Division II district tournament at Upper Lansdowner in Asheville.
Shrout shot rounds of 45 and 52 for a 97 total in the eastern sectional tournament held at Hocking Hills Country Club. She tied for sixth overall and was one of the three individuals to advance.
The top three teams and individuals qualified for the district.
