While driving around Lawrence County, it’s pretty hard to miss all the political signs along the roadways. Every couple of days, a few more seem to pop up.

Candidates are trying to get their names out there in hopes of earning your vote.

But signs aren’t the only way they hope to accomplish that.

Some local candidates have taken to social media to post videos about the issues they want to tackle if elected. Many will also go door-to-door and speak with you in person.

Next week, there are two events organized by two separate groups of citizens, designed to let the public hear what candidates have to say and allow them to ask questions of those candidates. Those events are listed in our community calendar if you want the details.

There is a lot of information for voters to consider when picking the best candidate and it is certainly worth taking the time to think carefully before marking a ballot.

But the first step is making sure you’re registered to vote. There is still plenty of time, but don’t let that time slip away from you. The deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 8 election is Oct. 11.

Applications for absentee ballots, to be mailed for the Nov. 8 general election, must be received by boards of elections by noon on Nov. 5.

Absentee ballots, returned in person or via a method other than U.S. Mail, must be received by the boards of elections by close of polls on Nov. 8.

Absentee ballots returned by U.S. Mail must be postmarked no later than Nov. 7 and received by boards of elections by Nov. 18 to be counted.

On Election Day, you must cast your ballot in your precinct at your designated polling place between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. If you don’t know your polling place and precinct, contact the board of elections office and they will be happy to let you know.

Another deadline worth mentioning is one we have here at The Tribune regarding letters of endorsement for candidates. Several months ago, we revamped our letters to the editor policy and published it on this page, but I thought it was worth repeating.

In order to ensure fairness and accuracy in all material published in our newspapers, Ironton Publications Inc. has set the following guidelines for letters or opinion submissions:

• Letters must be 350 words or fewer.

• Letters may only have one author.

• Letters may not be submitted on someone else’s behalf.

• Letter writers must submit their name, address and phone number for confirmation. Only the city of residence and name will be published.

• Letters not submitted electronically must be hand-signed. Emailed letters must come from the email address of the writer.

• Letters may endorse a candidate, issue or person, but letter writers may not make personal attacks on other people, businesses, etc.

• Letters from supporters or endorsing a candidate must be received at least four weeks prior to an election (Oct. 11) and we will cease publishing them at least two weeks prior (Oct. 25).

• All assertions made in letters built on opinions and any factual statements must be easily verifiable.

• All letters are subject to editing for length, clarity, spelling, grammar and AP style.

• Form letters will not be published.

• No more than two submissions by one author will be published each month.
