FRANKLIN FURNACE — The Green Bobcats needed a big game. Tyler Hughes gave it to them.

Hughes ran 15 times for 137 yards, caught three passes for 66 yards, scored three touchdowns, returned a punt 47 yards to set up a score and had an interception return for another 20 yards as Green knocked off the Sciotoville East Tartans 34-14 last Friday.

The win doubled Green’s win total from last season at 4-5 and put them 1-2 in the Southern Ohio Conference Division I.

Green racked up 207 yard rushing on 35 attempts while quarterback Steve Blanton was 4 of 8 for 82 yards and three touchdowns.

Hughes took the handoff on the second play of the game and exploded 62 yards for a touchdown. Keith Stepp’s conversion kick made it 7-0.

Blanton and Hughes hooked up on a 54-yard pass play at the start of the second quarter and it was 13-0.

East (3-6, 0-3) cut the deficit to 13-6 midway through the second quarter on a 9-yard touchdown run by Austin Elrod.

But the Bobcats blew the game open in less than a minute.

Hughes and Blanton teamed up again on a 9-yard scoring pass with 59 seconds to go in the half. Blanton threw to T.J. McCloud for the conversion and a 21-6 lead.

Hughes’ interception led to a 16-yard scoring strike from Blanton to McCloud with just 10 seconds left in the half. The conversion kick was blocked and it was 27-6 at the break.

Senior fullback Chad Lewis pounded his way into the end zone on a 1-yard run in the third quarter and Stepp’s kick opened up a 34-6 lead.

Chris Rittner ran 58 yards for East’s final score with 7:03 left.
