Malone fits county needs

Regardless of what happens Nov. 2, the newest member of the Lawrence County Commission will know what it takes to do the job.
But, incumbent commissioner Doug Malone, a Democrat, has done enough to stand out over his opponent and earn another four years at the county’s helm.
Facing a former commissioner himself in Republican Paul Herrell, Malone’s experience and low-key personality gave him a slight edge and makes him the best fit for the position right now.
This is not to take anything away from Herrell, who has some good ideas about what the county needs to do to move itself forward. The man’s passion and love for the county is admirable.
But Malone has worked hard on the commission over the past eight years. Whether you agree with the moves the commissioners have made or not, it is hard to argue with the fact that the county is in better financial shape than it has been in awhile, despite a brutal national economy and state cuts in funding.
While neighboring counties like Scioto and Jackson have faced state intervention and significant layoffs, Lawrence County has been able to maintain its vital services.
This doesn’t mean that Malone should get a free pass though. Not even close.
In fact, if he wins, Malone will be entering his third term and should prioritize what he would like to accomplish. We challenge him to create a tangible list of goals and share this with the public, who can then hold him accountable.
Malone has the experience. He has the knowledge. He seems to have a good relationship with others on the commission.
Now is his time to step into the limelight a little more and lead the way.
