BURLINGTON — A basketball tournament is scheduled for July 9 to help raise funds for the upkeep of the Burlington Commons.

The event, now in its eighth year and run by the Concerned Citizens of Burlington, will take place at 8 a.m. at the park beginning.

“We’ll play the national anthem and have a 21-gun salute, then we’ll play basketball,” Quander Wilson, who has organized the event for the past four years and is emceeing this year, said.

He said the event has been endorsed by Medal of Honor recipients, such as Hershel “Woody” Williams, 92, who lives in Huntington.

Wilson said the event came together to honor fallen veteran Theodore Church, a classmate of his at South Point High, who is memorialized at the park with a monument and plaque, along with other local veterans.

He said the funds from last year’s tournament went toward installing cameras at the park to deter vandalism.

“All the money and proceeds go to the park,” he said.

The event will be catered and have a live DJ.

Those who wish to participate can contact Wilson at 304-544-7826, or they can register at Glockner South Point Ford.

Wilson said the fee for those who register in advance is $100, and early registrants will receive a free T-shirt. The cost to register on the day of the event is $120. He said the tournament will be capped at 12 teams.
