People for the Point event to kick off Saturday festivities

SOUTH POINT — People for the Point and Beth Wallace, co-owner of Slack and Wallace Funeral Home, are sponsoring glow-in-the-dark themed Zumba and yoga sessions at the South Point Community Park Friday evening as a way to kick off Saturday’s annual Party in the Park Independence Day celebration.

“We thought this was a good way to begin the Party in the Park celebration on Saturday,” Wallace said. “It’s open for anyone at any age.”

Wallace said there will be a black light, strobe light, glow sticks and neon body paint and that participants are encouraged to wear white or bright colored clothing and bring glow sticks if possible.

From 7-7:30 p.m., Kathi Jenkins will instruct a Zumba class. Jenkins, a Kitts Hill resident, has been teaching Zumba since about 2011.

From 7:30-8 p.m., Lisa Irish, of South Point, will instruct a Zumba Gold class. The class is lower-intensity than regular Zumba and geared toward senior citizens or those with more limited physical capabilities as one foot always remains on the ground. Irish also instructs Zumba and Zumba Gold classes at the South Point Community Center.

From 8-9 p.m., Huntington resident Jessica Hensley will instruct a yoga class. Hensley is a yoga instructor at Brown Dog Yoga in Huntington and also instructs yoga classes at the VA Hospital every Tuesday.

All of the sessions are on a donation basis.

Wallace said that free yoga classes are also offered at Slack and Wallace Funeral Home at 7 p.m. every Monday when room is available.
