HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — All military personnel and veterans are invited to attend a picnic at Harris Riverfront Park in Huntington on June 4.
The event, scheduled from noon-4 p.m., is organized by Tri-State Chapter 949 of the Vietnam Veterans of America, the West Virginia Marine Corps Coordinating Council and the Greater Huntington Park and Recreation District.
Ron Wroblewski, a Vietnam veteran who serves as president of both the Vietnam Veterans and the Marine Corps council, said the event is in its fifth year, and last year drew more than 750 people.
“Any veteran, military personnel and families, whoever they want to bring with them, are welcome and invited, and it’s free,” he said. “We just want to honor veterans and military personnel.”
The menu for the event will include BBQ sandwiches, hot dogs, potato salad, baked beans, cole slaw, water and sodas and soft serve ice cream, he said. In addition, Heiner’s Bakery will pass out samples.
Live music and games are scheduled to take place, and Wroblewski said they have “really, really nice door prizes” planned, including a whitewater rafting package, a room at Embassy Suites, tickets to the Clay Center and free dinners from area restaurants.
There will also be a display of weapons set up.
“We have a guy coming from Gallipolis,” Wroblewski said. “He has several old machine guns and newer ones. He set up with a truck. It’s a great display.”
Also on hand will be equipment displays from Marine Corps Reserve and an M38 Jeep from a private collector, as well as several antique cars from throughout the region.
Wroblewski asks that attendees bring proof of service to the event, such as DD 214 forms or VFW cards. He said the event was sponsored by many individual and group donors, including one from the United Mine Workers of America.
