HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Getting healthy helped the Coal Grove Hornets’ record get a little healthier.

Sam Angelo and Jaylen McKenzie returned from injuries and combined for 18 points to help the Hornets rally past the Cabell Midland Knights 56-54 on Thursday in the Huntington Invitational at Big Sandy Arena.

Angelo came off the bench to lead the Hornets with 12 points. Jeb Jones scored 10 points while Daniel “Rudy” Rutherford added nine points and Aaron Music eight.

Trey Chapman scored 13 points for Cabell Midland.

Griffin Adkins scored four points as the Knights took a 13-11 first quarter lead. Five different players scored for the Hornets.

Cabell Midland pulled away to a 34-27 halftime lead as Chapman scored eight points in the second quarter. Angelo scored seven points off the bench to keep the Hornets close.

The Horents’ defense stepped up in the third quarter as they outscored Midland 17-8 to lead 44-42. Rutherford and Jones scored six points each in the quarter.

McKenzie had four points and Aaron Music hit a big 3-pointer in the fourth quarter as Coal Grove held on for the win.

Coal Grove will face Teays Valley Christian at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Big Sandy Arena.
