WHEELERSBURG — Even if they were given a blank check, it probably wouldn’t have mattered. The Fairland Lady Dragons couldn’t buy a basket.

Fairland managed just 2 points in the first quarter and never recovered as the Lady Dragons fell 56-46 to the Wheelersburg Lady Pirates on Saturday.

“We came out flat and couldn’t make shots,” said Fairland coach Jon Buchanan. “We didn’t shoot well. We just didn’t have it tonight for whatever reason.”

Fairland was a dismal 20 of 68 from the field for 29 percent and just 4 of 19 from the foul line for 21 percent. The Lady Pirates hit 15 of 43 shots for 35 percent but converted 22 of 35 free throws.

Kennon Clarkson led Fairland (2-9) with 17 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists. Keri Napier added 10 points while Samantha Lamb and Jamie Phillips had 6 rebounds each.

The Lady Pirates (6-6) were led by Molly Knapp with 20 points and Kalyn Bailey scored 16.

Wheelersburg took advantage of the cold start to grab a 14-2 lead.

Napier scored 8 points in the second quarter as the Lady Dragons trailed 28-17 at the half.

Both teams scored 12 points in the third quarter to make it 40-29.

Clarkson then scored 9 points in the fourth quarter but Bailey and Knapp had 6 each as the Lady Pirates held on to win.
