IRONTON – George “Jug” W. Mellert, Jr., 86, of Ironton, passed away Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010, in Palliative Care at Baptist East Hospital, Louisville, Ky. Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday by Pastor Kenny Kelley at Spring Hill Cemetery, Huntington. Burial will follow. He was born Aug. 27, 1924, in Huntington, W.Va., a son of the late George Washington Mellert, Sr. and Dolla Sue Frashier Mellert. “Jug” was a veteran of the US Army Air Corp having served during WWII. He was a graduate of Marshall College and worked for C&O Railroad and the Huntington Health Department. He was also a retired Audit Agent for the Ironton and Portsmouth Internal Revenue Service. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Naomi Lambert Mellert; four sisters, Myrtle Cook, Georgia Shelton, Mildred Byrd and Geraldine Pauley; and two brothers, Hugh Mellert and Luke Mellert. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, George “Mac” and Yvonne Mellert; a daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Jerry McClellan; five grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; a brother, Joe Mellert; and two sisters, Elizabeth Napier and Emma Childers. Friends may call from 10 am until 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Reger Funeral Home in Huntington. A procession will leave the funeral home at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Military graveside services will be conducted.
