• October is Family History Month. It’s the perfect time to discover your family’s roots with the help of resources from Briggs Lawrence County Public Library including vital statistics, census records, newspaper archives, local histories, cemetery records and Internet resources. In addition to its regular resources, the library is presenting a series of workshops to get people started in this popular hobby.
• Five Family History Month programs are scheduled this week. Everyone attending the classes will receive free booklets on the workshop’s topic. For information or to register for a Family History Month program call the Main Library’s Hamner Room at (740) 532-1124 or call or visit the library branch where the program will be held.
• Learn the nuts and bolts of genealogy research – how to start, what to ask, who to ask, what to look for, and much more at a “Basic Genealogy” workshop at the Ironton Library at 2 p.m. Monday.
• Family history researchers can learn more about the valuable internet resource, Ancestry.com, at a 6 p.m. workshop on Monday at the Ironton library. The program repeats at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the South Point Library.
• Many families in our area have German ancestors. Get in touch with your roots and learn about the special problems faced by researchers and the information that is available at the “German Genealogy” workshop in the Hamner Room at the Main Library in Ironton at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
• In 2010, Americans were asked to fill out the U. S. Census form. Every 10 years, since 1790, our ancestors were also counted. These records hold a wealth of information for genealogy researchers. Learn to use this valuable resource in your family history research at a U.S. Census workshop at the Ironton library at 2 p.m. Thursday.

• Everyone interested in learning to crochet as well as those already experienced at the craft is invited to the Crochet Club at the Chesapeake Branch Library at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Beginners should bring a “G” or “H” hook and yarn. Experienced crafters may bring a current project. For information call (740) 867-3390.
• Bring a snack and a friend for October’s Classic Movie of the Month, “Arsenic and Old Lace,” starring Cary Grant, Peter Lorre and Raymond Massie at 2 p.m. Thursday at the South Point library. In this madcap comedy, a mild-mannered drama critic (Grant) learns that his two kindly and loveable aunts have been poisoning their boarders with elderberry wine. Meanwhile, two murderers (Lorre and Massey) move into the aunts’ house with the idea of adding a few corpses of their own.
• The Briggs Library children’s department offers programs for homeschooling families twice a month at two locations. This week’s classes featuring the topic, “Family History Month,” are at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Main Library in Ironton and repeating at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Southern Branch Library in South Point.
