Cruise-In helps children have a better Christmas

The Kyova Tri-State Mall will be the spot for hotrods, antique cars, music and prizes this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Members of BB’s Car Club are helping the Kentucky State Police Professional Association raise money for KSPPA’s Shop with a Trooper program by having a Cruise-In at the Kyova Mall. The program allows troopers to take a child in need shopping for presents for Christmas.

Jim Hayner, marketing director for BB’s Car Club, and his wife, Susie, owners of Magic Carpet Productions, are providing the music. Hayner said the registration fee for this Cruise-In is $5 and there is no admission charge for spectators.

“We’ll also have a 50/50 drawing, and a raffle to raise more money,” Hayner said. He promised some good entertainment, including the “chicken dance” and the hokey-pokey for the children, or children-at-heart.

“We pretty well interact with the people. We will have trivia questions and odds and ends to give away,” Hayner said. “When I turn the mic on, I have no idea what I’m going to say, it just comes out. We try to entertain people and keep a smile on everybody’s face.”

Kentucky State Trooper Chris Carter said the Shop with a Trooper program originated sometime around 2000, but it died off because of lack of staffing and funds. But they started it up again last year. Carter said last year they were able to help 16 children.

“We go to Walmart, where we’re tax exempt, and we run around and let them pick out $100 of toys, whatever they point to and give them lunch too,” Carter said.

Carter is optimistic that with this fundraiser they can help even more children this year.

“What we’re hoping is, last year we had very limited funding, as we did it at the last minute,” Carter said. “There are so many kids who need help.”

Carter said they find out about the children who need help in different ways. He said last year a woman had called, in tears, saying she wouldn’t be able to buy presents for her child at Christmas, and was so appreciative of their help.

“It’s neat to extend your hand out to people who need it,” Carter said.

For people who cannot make it to the Cruise-In, but want to help the cause, donations can be made at the Kentucky State Police Post 14, 5975 U.S. Route 60, Ashland, Ky. For more information, call (606) 928-6421
