WILLOW WOOD — It takes one to know one. It takes one to stop one.
The run-oriented Symmes Valley Vikings had a good idea how to stop the run-oriented Manchester Greyhounds Friday, and they did just that as they rolled to a 46-25 win.
“We played very, very solid against the run. They’re a run-oriented team like we are,” said Vikings; coach Rusty Webb. “And our offensive line play has been improving each week.”
Manchester (0-4) couldn’t solve the Vikings’ running game as they amassed 444 yards on 47 attempts. Evan Herrell ran four times for 98 yards and Cody Myers had 64 yards on four tries as 11 different players carried the football.
“I thought our kids played well,” said Webb. “Our first and second strings did a very nice job.”
Symmes Valley (4-0) jumped out to a 27-0 lead in the first quarter and began to substitute early in the second quarter.
Hunter Boggs ran 4 yards for the first touchdown that capped an 8-play, 61-yard drive. Eli Ash kicked the first of four extra points.
The Vikings forced a three-and-out and on the first play from scrimmage Myers scooted 43 yards for a touchdown and a 14-0 lead.
Another quick stop led to a 3-play, 45-yard drive with Jacob Patterson going the final 6 yards for the score and a 21-0 lead.
Herrell had a 5-yard scoring run to cap a 5-play, 55-yard march that extended the lead to 27-0 with 1:09 left in the opening quarter.
On the Vikings’ next possession, Herrell raced 58 yards on the first play from scrimmage and the first team went to the bench with a 34-0 lead.
Manchester went on a 13-play, 73-yard scoring drive against the second tam with Austin Diggs scoring on a 1-yard run and it was 34-7 at the break.
Herrell ran the second half kickoff to the 35 of Manchester and brother Alec Herrell scored on the next play as the Vikings went up 40-0.
The Greyhounds scored on their next possession when Diggs fumbled and offensive lineman Justin Orme picked up the ball and ran 70 yards for a touchdown.
Manchester scored again on a 35-yard pass from Dalton Walters to Travis Combs, but the Vikings answered with a 10-yard scoring strike from Tyler Rowe to Austin Owens to cap a 10-play, 50-yard drive.
Diggs ran 12 yards for the final Manchester TD with 12 seconds to play.
