HUNTINGTON W.Va. — Community members and business leaders took part in the 12th annual Bernard L. Edwards Memorial Golf Tournament hosted by Ohio University Southern Monday afternoon at the Guyan Golf and Country Club.

“We had 20 teams playing this year with a vast representation from across the Tri-State,” Stephanie Burcham, tournament director, said. “This tournament is instrumental in helping us raise funds for the campus.”

Every year the tournament switches off benefiting the electronic media programs of the Ironton campus and the Ohio University Proctorville Center. This year all funds raised through the tournament will benefit the Ironton program.

“Each year our students volunteer countless hours doing community productions of the Ironton Memorial Parade, Christmas parades and high school sports,” Don Moore, director of the electronic media department, said. “They do this by utilizing the equipment that is in our mobile production unit. Upgrading that equipment is our goal this year.”

Burcham said that between $10,000 and $15,000 is usually raised through the tournament.

Participants enjoyed Giovanni’s pizza and then teed off at 1 p.m. Snacks and beverages were available on the course as well as a banquet after the tournament, where course awards and door prizes were given.

Sponsors for the tournament include Giovanni’s, Glockner South Point Ford, Lawrence Economic Development Corporation/ Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce, SunCoke Energy, Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital, St. Mary’s Medical Center, Quality Care Nursing, WLGC Radio, Adventures on the Gorge and Pepsi Bottling as well as 40 hole sponsors.

“I’ve been doing this tournament for eight years. It’s for a great cause and it’s a great course,” Bill Willan, executive dean of Ohio University, said. “We always have a lot of fun being out here and supporting the Ohio University Southern campus. They do a lot for the community and we’re happy to be a part of it.”
