NIU’s late touchdown nips Bobcats, 21-14

ATHENS (AP) — Drew Hare threw an 18-yard touchdown strike to a wide open Chad Beebe in the end zone with 6 minutes left, and Northern Illinois held on to beat Ohio 21-14 on Tuesday night.
Hare’s game-winning TD pass capped an 8-play, 70-yard drive for the Huskies (9-2, 6-1 Mid-American Conference).
The Bobcats drove to the Huskies 42 on the ensuing series, but stalled when Marlon Moore recovered a Landon Smith fumble with 4:03 to play. The Huskies then ran out the clock.
Hare was 15 of 23 for 178 yards with two touchdowns. His 32-yard touchdown pass to Akeem Daniels gave the Huskies a 14-7 lead with 9:25 to play in the third quarter.
A.J. Ouellette ran for 127 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead Ohio (5-5, 3-3). Derrius Vick threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Ouellette to tie it at 14 with 8:50 to play.
Akron 30, UMass 6
AKRON(AP) — Kyle Pohl passed for 277 yards and two touchdowns and Akron beat UMass 30-6 on Tuesday night.
Pohl had touchdown passes of 7 yards to L.T. Smith in the first quarter and 12 yards to Conor Hundley in the second quarter. Those touchdowns and a pair of field goals by Robert Stein had the Zips (5-6, 3-4 Mid-American) ahead 20-0 at halftime.
The Minutemen (3-8, 3-4) scored on Austin Whipple’s 1-yard pass to Jean Sifrin early in the third quarter before Hundley ran 12 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter and Stein added a third field goal in the fourth quarter.
The Zips dominated in total yards 411-235, with the Minutemen gaining just 67 yards on the ground. Zach D’Orazio made 10 catches for 121 yards for Akron.
Whipple was intercepted three times and the Minutemen lost a fumble in the cold, snowy conditions that included wind chills in the zero-degree range.
