Character luncheon serves as fundraiser
On Saturday the commons area of Ironton High School was filled with characters from several classic children’s cartoons.
The characters, which included Tweety Bird, Winnie the Pooh, and Woody from “Toy Story” visited IHS to spend the day and have lunch with children in the community. The luncheon served as a fundraiser for the IHS’ flag core and majorette team.
“We started doing this a couple of years ago,” Patty Freeman, choreographer for the teams said. “We do projects like this to help raise money for props, equipment and costumes.”
While the luncheon is a vital fundraiser, its biggest benefit, according to Freeman, is that it provides an opportunity to give back to the community.
“This is a way of giving back to the community while also earning the money we need to be able to entertain the community on Friday nights,” Freeman said. “We look at it as a win-win situation. We’re sharing happiness and it also gives us an opportunity to work with a different age group of children. We love to just be able to entertain the kids.”
Along with having lunch with their favorite characters, children were also able to get their faces painted and play in the Mickey Mouse bounce house.
Admission to the luncheon was $5 and all proceeds went to the IHS flag corps and majorette team.
