GREENUP, Ky. — What started as a leisurely paddle down the Little Sandy River in Greenup, Ky., quickly turned into a business venture for one Ashland couple.

That was back in mid-June when Myra, 48, and Sandy Mosser, 49, first put their kayaks in the water at the Greenup County Boat Ramp and floated by a plot of land that caught their eye.

A man was cleaning the lot, said it was for sale.

“We weren’t looking for property or to start a business,” Myra said. “It just kind of happened.”

About three months later, the couple would celebrate the grand opening of Dragonfly Outdoor Adventures.

Myra said she and Sandy fell in love with the campsite and the history behind it.

Although the campsite had changed hands by the time the women purchased it, the original owner, a former Ashland Oil engineer, built a pagoda-style cabin in the 1980s from reclaimed and recycled items.

About a week later, the Mossers became the proud owners of that land and the two began restoring the structures with paint and cleaning up the riverfront.

For kayakers who know the struggles of just starting out, opening an outdoor adventure business on that particular site was a good fit.

“As far as making it a kayaking destination and business, that came from the fact that we could have a business where people could put in here and not have a really strong current,” Myra said. “It’s a good first step in learning to kayak.”

The venture was also a good fit, Myra said, because there are no others like it in the area.

“It just adds to people’s choices when they are looking for something to do,” she said.

Those who attended Saturday’s grand opening got a taste of some of those activities.

Along with a free meal of pulled pork BBQ and all the fixings, attendees were treated to 30-minute kayak sessions, yard games, paddleboating, door prizes and an open house of the 5-sleeper cabin.

So far, Myra said the cabin has already been a hit with vacationers from as far away as Louisville, Ky., and Indiana.

For visitors interested in a day-trip at Dragonfly Outdoor Adventures, one-person kayaks, or a tandem kayak, can be rented in one, four or eight-hour increments. There are also canoes and a paddleboat for rent.

For those who want an overnight experience, the cabin is available for rent, as well as one of 12 primitive campsites.

The campground is only about a 30-minute drive from Ashland, Myra said.

“It is far enough away that you feel like you’re in your own personal wonderland,” she said. It has a Swiss Family Robinson-character to it.”

Dragonfly Outdoor Adventures will be open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday-Sunday through the fall and is located at 52B Treasure Cove Road, Greenup, Ky.

After the winter, the site will be open throughout the week, Myra said.
