CHESAPEAKE — The downpour that hit the Tri-State on Friday poured down and into parts of the Chesapeake Community Center.

“There were three inches of water in the hallways,” Ruth Damron, director of the center, said.

Two volunteers who were there that night pitched in and pulled out the water with shop vacs.

“They worked through the night,” she said.

On Saturday a call was made to the Lawrence County Municipal Court to get extra help from Judge Donald Capper’s community workers.

“They sent us four men and that was such a help,” Damron said. “I’m thankful the court sent up some men to help.”

Flooding is a common occurrence at the center.

“This happens every single time it rains,” Damron said. “At the east end and middle door it gushes in.”

Damron went to the center on Saturday to help dry out the floors and carpeting.

“Fortunately it didn’t damage any equipment,” she said. “We put fans on it and it is most dried up.”

And the cost to clean up was almost nothing.

Now the center can focus on its upcoming rummage sale at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6.

“There is lots of clothing, glassware,” Damron said. “We have some furniture, chairs, end tables and a corner cabinet.”

Proceeds will go toward the upkeep of the gym and paying off repairs to the furnace.
