SAN ANTONIO, Texas – On Sunday, April 12, 2009, Jack Hunter Hoffman, formerly of Greenup, Ky. and Ironton, Ohio, passed away in San Antonio.
Jack was born July 16, 1922, in Greenup, to Edward and Harriett Hoffman. In 1939, Jack left high school before graduation in order to serve his country in the Second World War. He served in the Army from Nov. 15, 1939 through March 20, 1944. His last and most fond assignment was at Ft. Gulick in the Panama Canal of Central America, where, incidentally he contracted and survived malaria. Upon completion of his military service Jack and his wife Ethel operated the Hunter Theater in hometown of Greenup. He then went on to work for the C&O Railroad in 1946 beginning as a brakeman and retiring in 1983 as a conductor. Throughout his life Jack was an avid horseman, from riding his pony through Greenup County to showing horses competitively throughout the Midwest. Jack served on the Hecla Water Association Board from 1991-1998 and was a volunteer at the Sybene Senior Citizens Center as the DJ for their dance class from 1988-2000. In the spring of 2004, Jack and Ethel relocated to San Antonio to enjoy warmer weather.
Jack is survived by his wife, Ethel Hoffman of Boerne, Texas; children, Aurora Mercer of Fort Myers, Fla., Nancy Parr of San Antonio, Jack Hoffman of Boerne and Louis Hunter Hoffman of Poca, W.Va.; grandchildren, Stewart “Chip” Thornbury, Matthew Myers, Nicholas Hoffman, Adam Myers, Tyra Hoffman, Brittany Hoffman, Dustin Hoffman, Fawn Hoffman, Jacob Hoffman and Risa Hoffman; and great-grandchildren, Emma Claire Thornbury, Jack Thornbury, Caroline Myers and Elli Hoffman.
