FRANKLIN FURNACE— Francis William “Bud” Patten, 93, of Franklin Furnace, died Friday, April 24, 2009, at home. He was born Sept. 18, 1917, in Franklin Furnace, a son of the late Warren Leslie Patten and Ruth Oakes Patten. Bud was a World War II Army veteran, a graduate of Green High School class of 1935, and a member of Western-Sun Masonic Lodge in Wheelersburg.
He was married to Helen Nelson Patten, who preceded him in death Aug. 7, 2006. Surviving are two sons, Michael Francis Patten and wife Pamela of Franklin Furnace and William Jeffrey Patten and wife Sara of Franklin Furnace; four daughters, Phyllis A. Breeding and husband Lundy, of Woodbridge, Va; Dianna Lee Patten, of Franklin Furnace, Konnie Ruth Shanks and husband Joe, of North Lewisburg and Teresa Lynn Nottingham and husband Mark, of Cape Coral, Fla.; eight grandchildren, including his special grandson, Jason Patten; and a great-grandchild. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Fay Hornstraw, Marjorie Schwartze and Jean McCormick. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Swick-Bussa-Chamberlin Funeral Home in Wheelersburg, with Mike Musser officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens, with military graveside rites by the James Dickey Post 23 American Legion. Friends may call today from 5-8 p.m. at the Funeral Home, where Masonic services will be held at 8 p.m.
