HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Those looking for some family fun to kick off the Super Bowl weekend, need look no farther than the United Way of the River Cities.
The organization is hosting its 10th annual Super Saturday event at the Big Sandy Super Store arena in Huntington.
“We’re super excited about Super Saturday,” Cassey Bowden, director of resource development and marketing for the United Way, said.
The free event is an opportunity for the United Way initiative, Success by 6, to promote its 12 tips on raising healthy children. The tips include paying attention, playing and talking.
“The idea behind the event is to make sure it’s free family fun,” Bowden said. “People can come and build those connections.”
Activities will include games and arts and craft. The Marshall University football team and the Super Why characters from PBS will also be at the event.
“The young people see the football players and their success and it’s good encouragement,” Bowden said.
There will also be door prizes as well as grand prizes like movie tickets and bowling passes.
About 50 volunteers from MU’s Alpha Xi Delta sorority are also planning to help.
This is the first year the event has been held at in the arena. In previous years the organization had used a room in the Memorial Student Center at Marshall.
“It’s grown so much we had to change the location,” Bowden said.
The event is sponsored by the Herald-Dispatch, St. Mary’s Pediatrics and 93.7 The Dawg.
