Region 5 of the United States Environmental Protection Agency is conducting a five-year review of the former Allied Chemical and Ironton Coke Plant site on Third Street.

In accordance with the Superfund law checkups must be conducted at least every five years on sites that have been cleaned up with waste managed on-site “to make sure the cleanup continues to protect people’s health and the environment,” according to a statement from the EPA.

“We’ve had several meetings about future restricted use of the property when the entire cleanup is complete in a few years.”

The cleanup involved demolition of the coke plant, encapsulation of the Goldcamp disposal area, excavation and off-site disposal of contaminated soil and coal from the property, pump-and-treat system for groundwater, long-term monitoring and limits on use and access to the site. The former lagoon has been converted into a wetlands ecosystem.

This is the fourth five-year review of the site.
