MLK celebration planned

Ohio University Southern is hosting the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration at 6 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 20.
The celebration will be in the Bowman Auditorium on the campus of Ohio University Southern in Ironton. The 2014 theme is Ohio’s Legacy: Living the Dream.
In the words of Dr. King: “An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.”
This year’s event will also include participation from various performers and speakers from throughout the community.
“We will also announce the winners of the annual MLK Essay Contest,” Robert Pleasant, OUS director of enrollment and student services, said.
Refreshments will be served immediately following the program.

Interfaith Dialogue: Finding Our Common Ground
The aim of Interfaith Dialogue is to help bring together the communities to establish common ground and promote understanding, cooperation and partnership.
“Communication with other people who have different traditions and faiths from their own,” Pleasant said. “We each have the opportunity to learn and appreciate our own beliefs and traditions as well as those of others of others.”

Film: “The March”
The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963 has been deemed one of the most important moments in contemporary history.
“It was when one of the world’s greatest leaders spoke, carrying the hopes and dreams of millions of disenfranchised American people,” Pleasant said. “This documentary recounts the events when 250,000 people came together to form the largest demonstration the young American democracy had ever seen.”
The OUS History Club sponsors this event and lunch will be provided.
