PORTSMOUTH — Andy Holtzapfel was in the zone.

The Ironton Fighting Tigers’ senior golfer put together the best round of his career with a one-under par 34 on the tough Portsmouth Elks Course to lead Ironton past a field of three other teams Monday.

Ironton had a 150 team score to easily outdistance Wheelersburg and Elliott County, Ky., who each posted 180 scores and host Portsmouth with a 186 total.

Holtzapfel had two birdies, one bogey and six pars to comprise his round.

Holtzapfel’s total overshadowed identical outstanding rounds by Jonathan Williams and Mason Weisgarber who each carded a 3-over par 38. Josh Cooke rounded out the scoring with a solid round of 40.

Josh Mullins had a 41 and Josh Zornes a 42 as every Ironton golfer recorded a better score than any golfer from the other three teams.

In a dual match on Tuesday at West Union, Ironton shot a blistering 132 team score on the par 33 course to beat the host team by eight shots.

Weisgarber turned in an sizzling 3-under par 30 to lead Ironton. Williams was also under par with a 32 and Holtzapfel was even par at 33. Mullins had the fourth best score for the Fighting Tigers with a 37.

Zornes shot a 38 and Cooke finished with a 41.

The Fighting Tigers (38-3) return to Portsmouth Thursday to face Jackson and Portsmouth in a tri-match.
