The Lawrence Scioto Solid Waste District has been selected as one of five host districts for an environmental law enforcement training workshop.
The workshop is part of a campaign by the organization Keep Ohio Beautiful, with the goal of educating public officials, community leaders and law enforcement on environmental crimes.
“It’s an honor that our district has been selected,” said Dan Palmer, director of the Lawrence Scioto Waste District. “We have a great lineup of speakers and we expect it to be a really informative day.”
The workshop’s main focus will be on issues such as open dumping and the proper disposal of tires, metals and other debris. The workshop will also focus on a growing problem across the nation — meth labs.
“We have Scott Duff, an expert in the field, coming in to talk about meth labs and how to spot them,” Palmer said. “His lecture will help inform law enforcement officers on the warning signs, and the type of household products people may use to make the drug.”
Palmer says the LSSWD has invited mayors, attorneys and law enforcement officials from not just Lawrence and Scioto counties but from around the Tri-State to attend as well.
“We’ve invited officials from Ashland and Huntington to attend,” Palmer said, “because this isn’t just an Ohio problem. It’s a national problem and we have to work together to clean it up.”
The workshop is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 6 at the Bowman Auditorium at the Ohio University Southern campus. Lawyers and registered sanitarians who attend can receive up to five continuing education credits.
“It’s a great opportunity for them to get education credits,” Palmer said. “We also have a great venue to host it in thanks to former OUS Dean Bill Willan.”
Registration can be made online at www.keepohiobeautiful.org or by calling 330-338-8328. Registration for the event is open until the week prior.
