Voters turn down liquor options

Three Lawrence County businesses with liquor options on Tuesday’s ballot will have to try again next election for it to pass.
Clark’s Pump-N-Shop on County Road 450 placed an option on the ballot to allow the sale of alcohol on Sundays. Out of 117 votes cast, 68 were “no” and 49 “yes.’’ This marks the second time the option has failed with the voters.
Director of Operations for Clarks Pump-N-Shop Brian Unrue said putting this option back on the ballot is simply in the spirit of revenue.
“People are driving a few miles to West Virginia and Kentucky to buy alcohol on Sundays,” he said. “Those people being able to stay here and spend that money locally is a win-win for everyone.”
The other two options were to establish the sale of alcohol at Sam’s Club and Walmart in South Point. The options were left up to the voters in Burlington No. 1 precinct and had a nearly identical outcome, with 113-55 in favor of “no” for Sam’s and 113-53 in favor of “no” for Walmart.
Senior Manager of Communications, Public Affairs and Government Relations for Walmart Erica Jones said the option on the ballot in regard to Sam’s and Walmart were a result of customer demand.
“Many of our South Point customers and Sam’s Club members have requested the opportunity to purchase beer and wine,” she said. “This option would allow us to meet those demands.”
Only stores within the corporation limits of Ironton can currently sell alcohol on Sundays.
Robert Ackerman owns Leo’s Carry Out in South Point and said he didn’t foresee any of the liquor options passing.
“The one has failed before,” he said. “Past South Point there is no alcohol sales at all in Lawrence County.”
Ohio guidelines allow for six state liquor stores in Lawrence County and there are currently two, Leo’s in South Point and CVS in Ironton.
