It’s time to fly.

The second Community Plane Ride Day will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Lawrence County Airpark in Chesapeake. The event’s rain date is Sunday, Sept. 22.

“If people are there and it’s after 5 p.m. we’ll still fly them,” pilot Joey Johnson said. “The time is set to really just give people an idea of what time to be there.”

The Girl Scouts of Kentucky Wilderness Road Council will serve hot dogs, hamburgers, bagged snacks, cookies and soft drinks at the airpark’s picnic shelter.

The event is sponsored by the Tri-State Pilots’ Association, Attitude Aviation and McDonald’s of Chesapeake, Ironton and Proctorville and cost to fly is $25 per adult and $5 for children 7-and-under with a paying adult. Proceeds will go toward the airport maintenance fund.

“Turn toward the river on U.S. 52 at Big Sandy Superstore,” Johnson said about getting to the airpark. “Go through the stop sign and it’s ahead a quarter mile.”

The airpark is one of the oldest in Ohio, opening in 1929 on Labor Day.

This year’s first plane ride day was held in early June.
