Gallipolis outlasts Fairland in offensive battle

GALLIPOLIS — What was supposed to be a football game looked more like a basketball game in the first half.
But the scoring pace slowed down in the second half for Gallipolis and stopped for Fairland as the Blue Devils outscored the Dragons 63-38 Friday in a non-league game.
Gallipolis (2-1) led 22-18 after the first quarter and both teams scored 20 points in the second quarter to make it 42-38 at the half.
But Fairland (1-2) failed to score in the second half and Gallipolis got three fourth quarter touchdowns to pull away for the win.
The two teams combined for 933 total yards.
Fairland quarterback Chance Short was 18 of 26 for 296 yards and three touchdowns. The Dragons had 124 yards rushing as Evan Maddox ran 20 times for 141 yards. Nathan Campbell caught 10 passes for 221 yards.
Gallipolis had 513 total yards with 274 coming on the ground. Quarterback Wade Jarrell ran 21 times for 154 yards and four touchdowns while also hitting 21 of 27 passes for 239 yards and three scores.
Ty Warnimont ran 15 times for 95 yards and a touchdown. Reid Eastman caught seven passes for 109 yards.
Fairland jumped out to a 12-0 lead with two touchdowns within one minute.
Short hit Kyle Sowards with a 25-yard TD pass at the 10:18 mark. Gallipolis fumbled the ball away on its first play and Short threw 67 yards to Campbell one minute later.
Gallipolis answered quickly with a 24-yard pass from Wade Jarrell to Wes Jarrell and it was 12-7.
But Short and Campbell clicked on a 59-yard scoring pass and it was 18-7.
It took all of 12 seconds for Gallipolis to score as Wade Jarrell hit Eastman on a 30-yard TD pass and the Fairland lead was 18-14.
The Blue Devils took the lead about two minutes later on a 13-yard run by Wade Jarrell and his conversion run made it 22-18.
Maddox scampered 39 yards to begin the second quarter as Fairland went back on top 26-22. Maddox also ran for the conversion.
Wade Jarrell ran 46 yards for a touchdown 21 seconds later and Gallipolis led 29-26.
Fairland took less than three minutes to respond as Maddox had a 2-yard scoring run and the Dragons were up 32-29.
Gallipolis got the next two touchdowns to take the lead for good. The Jarrells hooked up on a 5-yard scoring pass and Wade Jarrell ran 30 yards for another score with 1:40 left and it was 42-32.
But 24 seconds later Maddox went 2 yards for a touchdown and the Dragons were down 42-38 at the half.
Neither team scored in the third quarter and Gallipolis got the first touchdown of the second half with 7:38 to play on a 13-yard run by Wade Jarrell for a 49-38 lead.
Warnimont ran 19 yards for a touchdown with 4:55 left and Logan Allison added a 24-yard scoring run with just under three minutes to go.
