Two trees in front of Open Door School in Ironton snapped during Wednesday’s storms, blocking the entrance for the disabled students at the school.
Tim Nunnery, Lawrence County Board of Developmental Disabilities public relations and personnel director, said employees began a cleanup effort as soon as they knew the trees were down.
“The maintenance staff has been working since (Wednesday night),” Nunnery said. “We want to get this removed as quickly as possible to get the school accessible. We will do what we can.”
One tree was cut down and cleared by 11 a.m. on Thursday, which is when classes resumed. The other tree was set to be completely removed later in the day.
The storm carved a path from the Beechwood Terrace through Eleventh Street.
By 8 a.m., a crew from Kay’s Tree Service in Huntington, W.Va., was clearing out a pine tree that had fallen onto a house on Eleventh Street. The cleanup took about 90 minutes and only damaged a part of the gutter of the house.
Ironton Mayor Rich Blankenship said all the reports his office received were of downed trees and limbs.
“We have had crews out all day (Thursday) cleaning up,” he said. “It seems to be mainly on the south end of town.”
There have been no reports of property damage, Blankenship said, and the cleanup will continue today.
